Often there are people who silently struggle with the enemy of depression. Going through the struggle often feels so constraining like there is no escape from the darkness. During the moment, you feel as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel. However, when the moment of depression goes away its like you can finally be free. When your not in depression, everything seems beautiful and bright.
For this project I wanted to portray both the moment one is in depression versus when the moment of depression has passed. This is a important subject to me since this is something I've struggled with. Talking how depression, and mental health in general, is a topic that I feel is not addressed enough. Since the subject I chose is very important to me, I had to be the model in the photos since this is a representation of my struggle. Photos were taken by Jourdyn Cluver.
The dark figure on the left is the representation of depression and the figure on the right is the representation of not being in depression. For the figure on the left, I chose to use the full body since it feels like you have no escape- I chose chains around the whole body to represent this. For the headpiece, I took rope and cut it up to form a wig, and then spray painted the wig black. To make the wig look full, I photoshopped more pieces of rope in. I chose the color black for this figure since depression is a dreary subject
The light figure on the right, I decided to go with a floral headpiece since flowers represent life. I had this figure in all-white to contrast the two moments. I also incorporated a green wrap around this figure since green means growth and new beginnings.
The overall meaning of this piece is, even though you're in the moment of depression and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, feel no escape, or feel as if life has no meaning. There WILL come a time where it finally goes away and you can finally breathe and feel full of life again.
